Abstract
This chapter presents the traditional categories of overview, etiology/pathophysiology, signalment/history, clinical features, key differential diagnosis, diagnostics, and therapeutics of yews toxicology in equine. Yews are evergreen trees and shrubs that grow natively throughout the northern hemisphere. Ornamental yews account for most cases of equine intoxication, usually through inadvertent consumption of landscape plants or inappropriate disposal of trimmings in pastures or paddocks. Horses that survive acute cardiac effects may develop colic or diarrhea from the irritant compounds in yew. The chapter presents a wealth of color photographs to aid in plant identification. It is an indispensable reference for veterinary clinicians and students dealing with equine medicine, as well as for anyone seeking concise and comprehensive information about equine toxicology.
