N2 - On 12-13 April 1996, the Office on AIDS of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) convened a research workshop to consider the problem of AIDS-related stigma, its impact on the epidemic, and priorities for empirical research. The workshop, co-chaired by Gregory Herek and Leonard Mitnick of NIMH, was designed to promote consideration of empirical research and theory- building that would have both basic and applied scientific significance, including implications for policy makers and opinion leaders. The following report summarizes the workshop's discussion and principal recommendations for research priorities in this area.
