Abstract

A panel presentation brings together the two groups of researchers that have focused on rendering techniques for visualization technologies and on designing visual elements for the purpose of visualizing a certain application domain. The presentation will argue that utilizing visual design is difficult but important for visualization. There is a need for researchers to work harder to tap into the centuries of design knowledge that exists in other fields. The panelists will discuss: sensory design issues as a driving problem for visualization research; environmental sciences visualization; visual design for science; prescriptive advice for visualization; and the search for insight into the science behind the art of effective visual representation.
