Valence-bond crystal in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet with orbital degeneracy

The ground state of pyrochlore lattice of threefold orbitally degenerate S = 1/2 magnetic ions was discussed. It was shown that the orbital degrees of freedom modulates the spin exchange, removing the infinite spin-degeneracy chararacteristics of pyrochlore structures. The resulting state was found to be a collection of spin-singlet dimers with a residual degeneracy due to their relative orientation. Analysis shows that at the lowest transition temperature, given by the magnetoelastic coupling, the degeneracy was lifted through the spin-Peierls distortion.
