Using wastewater for mass microalgae production as an energy crop

Abstract

This paper demonstrated a novel mass microalgae production system which is using municipal wastewater to produce microalgae biomass for energy recovery. In this project, raw centrate from municipal wastewater plant without any treatment was used as algae culture medium. Algae strain Chlorella showed great ability for nutrient remove and algae biomass production. In a low light intensity condition and 1/3 harvesting rate, the system can produce total biomass of 1.3 g-L 1day-1 with 60% volatile biomass and remove 40% of COD, 15% of TKN, and 60% PO4-P. By adjusting the operation parameter, such as increasing light intensity, reduce harvesting rate, more nutrient could be removed by the algae.
