Abstract

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, multifactorial, neurobehavioral disease characterized by excess fat mass accumulation reflecting dysfunction of the energy regulatory system. This chapter will review normal energy regulation and the pathophysiology of obesity, including causes and contributors to obesity. Understanding the complexity of this disease allows for a better appreciation of the roles of lifestyle therapy, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery.
