Abstract

The case-control study method was used to ascertain risk factors for development of menstrual toxic shock syndrome in the Tri-State Toxic Shock Syndrome Study. Evaluation of the methods used in this study considers the potential effect of susceptibility, performance, and detection biases on the statistical comparisons. The critique supports the statistical conclusion that there is an increased risk of developing menstrual toxic shock syndrome with the use of tampons.
