Abstract
Numerical results are presented for transient mixed convection in horizontal porous layers partially heated from below. The interaction between the buouyancy effects and forced flow, which evolves in time, has been examined. For a heat source whose length is greater than three times the layer's height, instability in the flow and temperature fields is due to the destruction and regeneration of recirculating cellular flows. The period of oscillation is found to be function of the Peclet number. The criteria for the approach to steady state convection are also discussed.
