N2 - The experimental evidence that the surface of gravel-bed streams is usually coarser that the substrate is elucidated by introducing the 'surface layer', an interface surface having a grainsize composition. The grainsize composition at the interface is assumed to be different from both the transport composition and the surface composition, by related to them by certain equation.
