Abstract

Despite several decades of research regarding strategies for teaching functional communication skills to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), many individuals today still have no means of communicating with their peers or caregivers. This chapter reviews some ways in which the science of behavior analysis has been applied to address deficits in functional communication among individuals with IDD, specifically focusing on issues relating to generalized and conditional use of newly acquired communicative behaviors. Areas in which further research could extend our understanding of behavioral principles and their application to the practice of augmentative and alternative communication for individuals with IDD are also explored.
