Abstract

Time-gated ballistic-photon imaging is employed to analyze the liquid-core breakup process in swirl-coaxial injectors for rocket spray applications. The experimental approach relies on an ultrafast laser source along with a picosecond time gate to discriminate against photons that undergo multiple scattering within the near-nozzle region. This approach reduces the relative contribution from diffuse photons and allows the formation of shadowgraph images that highlight liquid-core breakup processes within moderately dense sprays. Measurements are performed under a variety of gas and liquid flow rates, as well as for different injector configurations. Results indicate that ballistic-photon imaging achieves significant contrast enhancement and provides clear indication of liquid-core structures and continuous ligaments that emanate from the rocket injector. The effects of air flow and nozzle geometry on the breakup process are discussed and summarized.
