Abstract

Further work-up of back pain should be considered when any of the following red flag signs or symptoms are present: signs of infection (fever, malaise), pain unrelated to activity or nighttime pain, neurologic signs or symptoms (weakness, paresthesias), unintentional weight loss, or pain that fails conservative management and persists for greater than 1 month.
