Abstract
A model was developed to simulate the tape laying of plates made of thermoplastic matrix composites. The model provides relationships between the geometry, material properties, tape laying process variables and properties of the composite plate. On the basis of the model, a computer code was written which gives the following information: temperature, crystallinity, degree of consolidation, and degree of bonding. Preliminary tests were performed measuring the short beam shear strengths of APC-2 graphite/PEEK tows processed at different pressures, temperatures, and time. The data obtained thus far show good agreement with the results of the model.
