Abstract
Atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries is a well known cause of neurologic deficit. Carotid artery stenosis can be treated medically or surgically. In this review the major clinical trials comparing medical treatment to endarterectomy are discussed. Therapeutical decision making should distinguish symptomatic from asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Some recommendations are given for daily practice based on meta-analysis and international guidelines.
