Abstract

The extinction coefficient for acoustic branch, second-order (two-phonon) Raman scattering from a zigzag chain, using force constants and polarizabilities appropriate to polyethylene is computed. As a consequence of the computation, the authors propose identification of a line at 890 cm** minus **1 in the published Raman spectrum of polyethylene as a second-order Raman line.
