Abstract

A thought experiment in using the Comédie-Française registers to imagine what theater might have sounded like offers us not an affirmation of historical recreation but a meditation on the limits of historical inquiry, as well as an affirmation of the possibility of highly experimental, even speculative humanistic inquiry into the past.
