Abstract

Background information on the River Vistula, Poland's largest river, is presented. The effects of pollution and eutrophication and river engineering works are discussed. The current status of nature conservation, the need for greater environmental protection for the river and its floodplain, and the problem of integrating recreation and tourism with nature conservation are reviewed.
