The introductory chapter establishes the need for the present volume by providing an overview of the main foci of previous research in SLA examining advanced proficiency, and by identifying various lacunae in the data base of what we know. We provide a description of the volume's structure, explaining the rationale for each of the four sections, and we introduce the main topics and aims of each chapter.
