The origins of symmetry relations for membrane diffusion

Abstract

Ternary diffusion across chemically well-defined membranes containing mobile carriers often shows symmetrical behavior consistent with the Onsager reciprocal relations. This symmetry, exact at small gradients and a good approximation at large gradients, is a result of stoichiometric restraints.
