Abstract

This article examines how Mexican youth's civic identities are being made in school and community settings in relation to discourses and practices of immigration. Taking a transnational approach, we argue that Mexican youth civic identities are an embodiment of security and fear, freedom and vulnerability. The discourse and practices of immigration essentialize their identities racially, while the youth seek to negotiate and create alternative identities.
