The Lake Agassiz-Lake Superior connection.

Abstract

Five channel complexes in NW Ontario, containing about 17 individual outlets, carried water from Lake Agassiz eastward into the Nipigon basin during Late Wisconsinan time, each of these systems is composed of many channels, some of which bifurcate and rejoin, and each contains coarse fluvial deposits including boulders a metre or more in diameter. Many of these channels have been eroded deeply into Proterozoic diabase in their lower reaches, contain dry plunge basins at the head of their most deeply entrenched segment, and have a delta or subaqueous fan of sediment where they emptied into the Nipigon basin. Another group of channels with similar characteristics but finer bedload deposits, connects the Nipigon and Superior basins. To the SW, several less-well-defined channels connect the Lake Agassiz basin directly with the Superior basin, and probably carried overflow from Lake Agassiz, and in one case to it. The history of eastern outlets is described.-from Authors
