Abstract
The information contents of surface profile measurements and profile characterizations are developed in two ways. First, probability-based information content is used. This formulation shows the influence of measurement characteristics on the information content of the measurements. In addition, a constructive development of the information content of profile characteristics is presented. This formalism shows that the complexity of the calculation of surface profile characteristics is related to the information content of the profile measure.
