Abstract

To the Editor: This letter is to alert the medical community to the grave medical condition of Dr. Anatoly Koryagin, who is believed to be near death in a Soviet prison. Dr. Koryagin was a psychiatrist who served with other Soviet citizens on the Working Commission to Investigate the Use of Psychiatry for Political Purposes. In a 1981 Lancet article, he described 16 Soviet citizens who were diagnosed as mentally ill after attempting to defect or dissent.1 Dr. Koryagin found no sign of mental illness or of their having received treatment during their “wall therapy” incarcerations.
