Abstract

Some therapist behaviors are more helpful than others. The current study is a report on an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of a new instrument, The Couple Therapist-Supporting and Undermining Behavior Scale (CT-SUBS), designed to assess couple therapist behaviors that contribute to and detract from both the therapeutic relationship and client well-being in relationship-focused therapy. The EFA revealed four dimensions of therapist behaviors according to participant (n = 270) report: (1) Active and Hopeful Engagement, (2) Unsupportive, (3) Dismissive, and (4) Supporting Individuals. We discuss the potential uses of the instrument in relationship-oriented therapy and directions for future research and training.
