Abstract

Bariatric surgery, one aspect of metabolic surgery, can cause amelioration, resolution, and possible cure of type 2 diabetes. Metabolic surgery in the future will include operations to treat type 2 diabetes that are not weight loss focused. These procedures will rely on neurohormonal modulation within, as well as outside, the peritoneal cavity. These metabolic procedures are and will always be in flux as surgeons seek the safest and most effective operative modality. Metabolic/bariatric surgery for type 2 diabetes has become part of the clinical armamentarium; it is also an invitation to perform basic research to discover fundamental scientific truths concerning the mechanisms elicited by these operations and perhaps the etiology of type 2 diabetes itself.
