Abstract
Remembers the return to the campuses in 1945, and the attributes of the teacher of those days, including both a regional and a topical speciality. The regional area was generally expected to be a continent or sub-continent beyond N America. Fieldwork was worshipped. Since then the doors have, through the quantitative revolution, been thrown open to abstract thinkers. But the modern movement had lost some of the respect for language that were once the traditional mark of the good PhD. -K.Clayton
