Abstract

The strategic deployment of technological resources on a global basis has increasingly become a critical determinant of success in many industries. This paper first describes four types of global strategic postures that companies may follow. Next, it defines key categories of technological capabilities, and identifies major dimensions of technology strategies for companies that are operating in global markets. Finally, the paper presents a model showing potential linkages between firms having different global strategic postures, their technology strategies, and their deployment of technological resources to obtain and sustain competitive advantage. The discussion concludes by identifying issues for both theoretical and empirical future research in this area.
