Abstract
The routine use of facial nerve monitoring is controversial. Several investigators advocate the routine use of facial nerve monitoring devices; however, there are no studies to date that prove their effectiveness. There is little in the literature discussing the proper technique and the pitfalls of monitoring. This discussion is critical in making the techniques of facial nerve monitoring safe and effective. Only when more standardized techniques are adopted can the question of usefulness be answered.
