Abstract
One aspect of faculty development that has received limited attention is the development of operative teaching skills. Just what the best way to teach operative orthopaedic surgery is a controversial area, and there is probably no one best way to provide this education. What we hope to provide in this chapter is a useful discussion of both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching operative skills to resident in the operating room to maximize the limited time available, as well as ensure patient safety. The authors use the structured framework of the BID model as an introduction, along with a discussion of other aspects which may influence the quality of education.
