Analysis of synovial fluid obtained by arthrocentesis is an invaluable clinical tool which frequently is necessary in order to establish the underlying cause of arthritis. In addition to evaluation of the physical characteristics and volume of synovial fluid, the mucin clot test, fibrin clot test, and total cell count may provide information of diagnostic significance. The detection of certain cell types (i.e. L.E. cells) by microscopic evaluation of synovial fluid may allow the establishment of a specific diagnosis.
