Abstract
Foodborne disease outbreaks represent public health emergencies that must be rapidly investigated to identify the source and ensure that preventable illnesses are avoided. Identifying the agent. vehicle. source of contamination. and factors contributing to the occurrence of the outbreak are critical for identifying new hazards. evaluating the effectiveness of existing control measures. and developing new prevention methods. The objective of this chapter is to present current. state-of-the art concepts on the rapid and comprehensive investigation of foodborne outbreaks. Topics covered include how foodborne disease outbreaks are identified. the rationale for conducting outbreak investigations. specific goals of these investigations. and approaches and methods for conducting excellent investigations in a timely manner. Event or establishment outbreaks are discussed separately from outbreaks detected through pathogen-specific surveillance. This edition first published 2013
