Surface versus bulk deformation in fatigue

Selected area electron channeling was used to detect the plastic strain gradient from bulk to surface grains which developed during low cycle fatigue. After an applied strain of 5%, the surface grains have undergone approximately three times as much accumulated strain as the bulk.
