Abstract
The reaction behaviors of the title complexes have been investigated under the dinitrogen by means of in situ IR study. It has been found that the two kinds of active species created at some stage of the thermal decomposition process of the complexes enable the propionic acid to convert to both acetaldehyde and pentanone. The universality for the ketonization reaction, the reliability of the results obtained, as well as the possible composition of the active species have been discussed to some extent in the paper. Finally, in terms of the in situ IR and GC analyses the reaction path of the formation of acetaldehyde has been tentatively elucidated too.
