Abstract

On heating of 2,4- or 4,5-diaryloxazole with 2-butyne-1,4-diol diacetate, the hetero-Diels-Alder-retro-Diels-Alder reaction occurred to give the 2-arylfuran-3,4-dicarbinol diacetate in good yield. By hydrolysis of the diacetate, the dicarbinol is obtained in almost quantitative yield.
