Abstract

Our technique for stress analysis of underground mine layouts uses two different methods for solving the governing differential equations. The boundary-element method is used to determine the far-field stresses and displacements, and the finite-difference method is used to determine the near-field stresses and displacements. Although our specific area of discussion is stress analysis, this technique should be of interest to anyone working in the physical sciences who must obtain numerical solutions to problems in infinite or semi-infinite regions. A coupled displacement discontinuity/finite difference (DD/FD) model is selected and a computer program is written. Refs.
