Abstract

It is shown that stable limit cycles can exist in a two-species open system in which only one bimolecular reaction that follows mass action kinetics occurs. The fluxes of the active species between the system and bath are uncoupled and depend linearly on the chemical potential differences. This appears to be the simplest system known that exhibits periodic solutions and multiple steady states.
