Abstract
A bosonic approach allowing one to detect a region of a spontaneously dimerized phase in an S=1 quantum-spin chain and to develop the critical theories on both phase boundaries is presented. The results obtained agree, in general, with the field-theoretical predictions involving the Wess-Zumino-Witten nonlinear model.
