Abstract

Normal values for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and isozyme pattern in the blood plasma of some mammals and birds are reported. Amongst artiodactyla the order of LDH activity was: cattle > water buffalo > sheep > goat. LDH 4 could not be detected in water buffalo. Guinea pig and rabbit which belong to order rodentia and lagomorpha respectively, exhibited similarity in LDH isozyme profile, viz, LDH 1 > LDH 5 > LDH 2 > LDH 3. All the mammals under study except horse had LDH 1 as the most predominant isozyme in their plasma. In horse plasma, LDH 3 was the most predominant isozyme. All the avian species studied, viz. fowl, partridge, quail, chokor and dove had only one LDH isozyme (LDH4) in their plasma.
