This special issue brings together a collection of experimental, theoretical, and simulation studies regarding the use of piston engines as reactors that produce chemicals with additional transfer of work and heat from or to the system. Given the complex nature of the topic, only a multi-disciplinary approach can lead to scientific progress and open the path to large-scale commercial implementation. Several of the articles collected here summarize findings from the Research Unit FOR 1993 on “Multifunctional conversion of species and energy” (229243862), funded for eight years by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which is gratefully acknowledged by two of the guest editors (B.A. & S.A.K.).
