Social goals

Abstract

Social sustainability has received less attention than other forms of sustainability, but it is no less important. Given that New Urbanism is intended to be at the forefront of sustainability, how should its social aspects be evaluated? What are the measurable indicators of social sustainability that can be used to help researchers and practitioners assess the social aspects of New Urbanism? Researchers need an evaluative framework against which the social aspects of New Urbanism can be assessed. The social goals embedded in the Charter—community, social equity, and the common good—constitute assessment criteria that researchers can use to operationalize and quantify social effects.
