Abstract

A number of approximate approaches for analysis of metallurgical solidification processes are reviewed. These approaches are essentially reduced versions of the detailed models in which major aspects of the process are accounted for via suitable approximations. It is noted that use of such approximations imposes severe limitations on the application of the methods. A new approximate method is introduced that overcomes many of these limitations and predicts results for practical solidification parameters in close agreement with those obtained from numerical models.
