Abstract

Silicon optical microbenches are implemented as integrated packages with custom design high frequency interconnects. Through comparison of the two designs, the second generation package is determined to have a simpler fabrication and is more amenable to state of the art measurement methods. Optical large signal and 20 GHz small signal results are obtained using commercially available VCSEL chips with 1.25 Gbit and 2.5 Gbit data rates. The second generation package with a 2.5 Gbit VCSEL has the greatest operational bandwidth with a return loss under -10 dB for 15 GHz and an open and symmetric eye diagram.
