This paper presents the results obtained from Auger analysis and anodic polarization experiments. Correlations can be made between corrosion behavior and impurity segregation. Sulfur segregates to the surface of nickel when heating above 450 degree C (842 degree F). Bombardment by argon ions revealed that segregated-sulfur was localized to within 10 A. Sulfur was also observed at the grain boundaries of nickel 200 when heating at the temperature range between 550 degree C (1022 degree F) and 650 degree C (1202 degree F). Electrochemical responses for the nickel specimens have sulfur segregation either at the grain boundaries or surface showed increased reactivity.
