Abstract
Sector echocardiography is becoming established as the primary method for ultrasound imaging of the heart. With the advent of the wide-angle format and depth of imaging to 21 cm, the potential for imaging the heart is vastly expanded over that of the single-crystal technique. This article describes a systematic approach to the sector echocardiographic examination, with special emphasis on acoustic windows, sector orientations and display of the imaged cardiac anatomy. Normal anatomy during diastole is illustrated diagramatically, with samples of abnormal images presented as still-frame sectors.
