Acidified ecosystems have been studied scientifically for about two centuries, with a gradual increase in knowledge that has accelerated greatly during the last 60-70 years. Studies of anthropogenic acid deposition date back 135 years, and knowledge of its effects upon ecosystems has increased rapidly in the last 30 years.
