Abstract
In order to regularly suspect and diagnose the presence of substance abuse, each physician must examine his or her own attitude towards this disorder. If substance abuse is viewed merely as a moral problem or as evidence of character weakness, it is not likely that the diagnosis will be made early and when indicated. None of us wants to spend the day thinking badly about or judging against our patients. In this context, physician attitude weighs more heavily perhaps even than knowledge about substance abuse or technical skill in its diagnosis and management.
