Abstract

cis- and trans-Diester-substituted alkenes react with Ru2(dmpm)2(CO)5 (dmpm = bis(dimethyl-phosphino)methane) to form the trans-substituted diruthenacyclobutane. This process was shown to be stepwise and reversible, and a zwitterionic intermediate is proposed.
