Reinnervation of adult hamster superior colliculus by regenerating retinal ganglion cell axons

Abstract

When the optic nerve of adult hamsters is transected and an autologous peripheral nerve graft is directed from the eye to the ipsilateral superior colliculus, retinal ganglion cell axons regenerate through the graft and in some cases penetrate the CNS and make synapses with neurons in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus. Unitary recordings from neurons in the superior colliculus of such peripheral nerve grafted animals reveal excitatory and inhibitory responses to light that are mediated by regenerated axons of retinal ganglion cells.
