Abstract

Examples of the recovery or restoration of engineered river channels in England and Wales are presented and assessed. Particular attention is paid to bed and bank stability and the availability of sediment from the upstream catchment. By allowing natural features such as pool-riffle sequences to re-form or by facilitating restoration, it is hoped that biological and aesthetic recovery will follow. (D.W.T.)
