Abstract

The artificial world of products design and manufacturing technology experiences changes that result in the evolution of these entities. These changes are similar to the biological evolution process in the natural world and can be tracked similarly. The co-development behaviour in the artificial world is also noticeable, which suggests that design and technology co-evolve in a manner akin to the co-evolution of species in nature. A co-evolution model and algorithms are proposed based on Cladistics - a biological classification tool. Machine-tools development case study is presented to demonstrate the model. Results prove the model propositions and illustrate the direct co-development of design and technology.
